March 16

Today was the last day of the CMTs. Woo-hoo!

We had spectacular, scrumptious birthday blueberry muffins for Ms. Domina's birthday.

We also found loopholes in math problems, like Sam Beaver and his class did in The Trumpet of the Swan. (We'll post a few examples in a comment to this post.)

We also have a new, apple-shaped reading chart, made by our artist-in-residence, Maia! We're going to use this chart to keep track of how many books we've read. The chart goes up to 100. How quickly do you think we'll be able to fill it in?

In library we watched two movies: one about the Scholastic Book Fair (we're looking forward to reading Castle of Mirrors by Margaret Peterson Haddix) and one about research papers, where triangles kept popping up! (It taught us about narrowing topics down and organizing our research paper.)

We decided to end our posts with a question to wonder about, like Sam Beaver does in The Trumpet of the Swan. Here's our question for today:
What is art?

  1. Here are some of the word problems we talked about after reading The Trumpet of the Swan today:

A family of 5 produces about 2,326 kg of garbage per year. Approximately how much is produced by each family member?
*It depends on how old each person is and how much they eat. If they're on a diet they probably don't eat much.

Peanuts grow on the ground in pods. Each pod is attached to the stem. What if you dug up 3 peanut plants and gathered 88 peanuts. How many pods might be attached to each plant?
*It depends on how old or young the plant is.

Julio walks 2/3 miles every day. Maggie walks 5/8 miles every day and runs 11/2 miles every day. How much further does Julio walk than Maggie?
*It depends on how tired they all are and if Julio and Maggie really go every day.

One way a healthy young person can keep fit is following a pattern of jogging 3 minutes and walking 3 minutes for 24 minutes. How many sets of jogging and walking would that be?
*It depends on how fast or slow you go, and if you take breaks or not.

Jerry has to read a book that is 157 pages. If he reads 15 pages a night will he finish the book in one week?
*It depends on what time he starts reading and how tired he is. It also depends on whether he reads the same 15 pages over and over again, or if he reads different pages.

47 students play in the orchestra play, 36 students in the band, and 86 students sing in chorus. How many more students sing than play musical instruments?
*It all depends on whether everyone is in school—maybe someone caught a cold, or took a vacation, or forgot their instrument at home, or lost their voice.

Which costs more, 2 pairs of ankle skates or 20 t-shirts?
*It depends on whether there are any sales like “Buy one, get one free.”

  2. I wonder why no one else thought of making math loopholes. I rock at loopholes!
